OilComm 2016 featured an all-inclusive show floor where attendees experienced a content program that tackled the challenges they face day to day, and looks down the road to recovery.
SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS
Satellite transmissions are the veins and arteries of the remote on- and offshore energy production facility, supplying crew members with a resource that is often more valuable than the one that they’re extracting – data. Today’s satellite operators boast powerful, lightning-speed services thanks to newly launched fleets of high-throughput spacecraft. But what does “high-throughput” mean in a world connected 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to ultra-powerful consumer broadband? Our satellite technicians and experts think you’re going to be surprised by how far HTS services have evolved in the past year and are excited to show you how much more HTS can do for the energy industry. Don’t just talk about satellite service, come see it live and in action with demonstrations, live-running applications and video transmissions that will connect the George R. Brown Convention Center to spacecraft in orbit!
TERRESTRIAL COMMUNICATIONS
Terrestrial carriers with big name-brand recognition in consumer cellular services see enormous value in the energy communications business. They have the capital to build infrastructure and the bandwidth to match and outpace speed and performance requirements. They’ve made a lot of promises to oil, gas and shale companies about the power of their complete service offerings, but are they still dedicated financially to fulfilling them? OilComm is giving terrestrial providers a chance to show off their new customized energy solutions and demonstrate that they can function as a reliable core service in a hybrid network. Come see live demonstrations and participate in hands-on tech workshops that are all designed to lead to the same, crucial benefit – significant cost savings for energy customers.
OilComm ventures into the midstream and presents an exploration of the communications technology that is transforming the transportation grid. This session forum will act as one large case study. Attendees will be presented with an example of a perfect, functional network of transport ships and trucks – all speaking to one another and communicating with an operational headquarters. As we explore this “perfect” network, our session leaders will introduce unexpected issues that require immediate action and adaptation. How can communications technology prevent a minor issue from ballooning into an uncontrollable, billion-dollar crisis? How can midstream managers maintain complete control of their assets at all times during a crisis? How are midstream and upstream networks related, and in some cases, dependent on each other? Find out during our live “Mobility for the Midstream” case study.
The oil field is now an enormous network of connected devices that communicate with each other and produce vast amounts of data for crew members and managers – that’s the Internet-of-Things concept in a nutshell. New IoT technologies are evolving the way we work and incorporating new tools such as iPhone apps and wearables to the industry’s arsenal. The IoT Forum will also focus on hardware and how consumer technology is being ruggedized for heavy industries, while maintaining user-friendliness. Discussions and demonstrations will include a sneak peak at new wearable solutions on the horizon – some that could change the way we monitor the health and safety of our workforce.
Energy executives and project managers often struggle to build perfect piecemeal communications architectures, especially in an environment where the definitions of efficiency and economic viability change every day. Even if you manage to succeed in building the perfect network, you still have to manage it and keep it up to date without breaking the budget. This track of workshops is designed for professionals who manage communications networks of all sizes as you prepare for recovery and build for tomorrow’s expectations. We invite you to come learn about the wonders of consolidating technologies and explore how to customize a range of brand new solutions that can make life easier for your entire team. Our experts will lead you through valuable decision-making strategies in determining which architectures work best for your specific operations and weighing the pros and cons of diversifying your vendor/supplier network.
Today’s energy industry networks are prime targets for a wide variety of threats looking to steal or destroy physical property, data, information and other valuable assets. Protecting these networks is no longer just a matter of corporate responsibility – it’s become an issue of national security. OilComm’s all-new Network Security Symposium delivers an exciting full day program of hands-on cyber security tech workshops, feedback sessions, research study presentations and demonstrations designed to expose attendees to the latest techniques and approaches being employed by the world’s leading energy companies. Led by network security experts from both in and outside of the energy community, the Network Security Symposium morning sessions will focus on identifying existing and emerging threats, understanding hostile motives and eliminating vulnerabilities. Presentations will also include real, visual examples of successful and unsuccessful preventative cyber-security measures with clear takeaways for energy industry professionals.
This session is an “unofficial” follow-up of our Network Security sessions on Wednesday, but a fascinating study for all attendees interested in secure communications. “Hackers on Hackers” presents a close look at how network security professionals are striving to become better hackers than the hackers themselves in order to protect their company assets. We explore the culture of virtual hack-a-thons and other Black Hat events that create unexpected learning opportunities and even how the science of hacking has become a fascination for professionals in the industry. What can we all learn from the people we’re working day and night to keep out of our clouds and hard drives? Find out from an entertaining workshop led by an eclectic group of friends (…and enemies.)
In the world of energy communications technology, there’s nothing more valuable than a well-trained professional with all the right qualifications and certifications to operate the latest equipment. Unfortunately, that person doesn’t exist without constant updating and training. At OilComm, we’ve created a one-stop shop for attendees to actually train and obtain certifications for equipment on-site at the show! Our session leaders will guide attendees to the certification programs and training they need and, if available, schedule training sessions on site. These workshops are designed for both crew members and mangers. For the latter, we’ll also be providing discussion forums on how to encourage mentorship within your own crew and, in some cases, fill mentorship gaps between age groups.
